I Am Not My Hair Recap- March 26, 2011

I attended the "I Am Not My Hair" event by COCOACHiCBeauty, hosted by Select Strands and sponsored by Mizani. The panel discussion was on the diverse perspectives of hair types and hairstyles; natural and relaxed hair; African heritage kinks and mixed textures; wearing a weave or wigs as a fashion accessory and hairpieces as an identity statement.

Panel included: T. Bernie, Cosmetic Executive and founder of COCOACHiCBeauty; Leatrice Carter, Owner Time Studio and Mizani Team Specialist; Keith Campbell, Hair Architect and Celebrity Stylist; KJ Rose, BET Music Matters Artist; Jessica Andrews,; Renae Bluitt, and Founder, Crush Media

The event was well attended and included displays from Mizani, Select Strands and panelist Keith Campbell's book - Cuts for Our Infirmities. It was a late start and limited seating when we arrived, but soon the reserved seats were open to everyone. There was wine, fruit and cheese platters and the hosting staff was very accommodating to all the guests. I'm not a  weave or a wig wearer (except on Halloween), so to see the racks of the different types of hair offered by Select Strands was fascinating for me.

T. Bernie, Moderator
T. Bernie, who normally wears a short hairstyle, kicked off the event wearing a custom wig from Select Strands. She lead with introductions and hair journeys of each panelist. The discussion continued with hair disasters, current hair types and if and how their hair defines them. Some key advice and takeaways from the event were: get to know your hair, interview your stylist, get maintenance instructions for home styling, communication is the key and express displeasure if unsatisfied. The panel ended with a song by KJ Rose titled "A Better Way."
